Google says a Panda refresh began this weekend but will take months to fully roll out. Google tells Search Engine Land that it pushed out a   Google Panda   refresh this weekend. Many of you may not have noticed because this rollout is happening incredibly slowly. In fact, Google says the update can take months to fully roll out. That means that although the Panda algorithm is still site-wide, some of your Web pages might not see a change immediately. The last time we had an official Panda refresh was almost 10 months ago:   Panda 4.1   happened on September 25, 2014. That was the 28th update, but I would coin this the 29th or 30th update, since we saw small fluctuations in   October 2014 . As far as I know, very few webmasters noticed a Google update this weekend. That is how it should be, since this Panda refresh is rolling out very slowly. After the recent rash of   map vandalism   and other map mischief that caused Google to shut down Map Maker, the company is   getting ready to reopen it . Simultaneously Google is instituting a new moderation procedure that will rely more heavily on community moderation than on in-house Google personnel. Google observed in support of the new approach, “We have come to the conclusion that of all the defenses available to keeping our maps clean, the interest of a community of well-intentioned users, is among the most reliable and fast.” Google announced today that the tool will see a phased reopening, starting early next month. Google will also be seeking “qualified Regional Lead candidates” to moderate edits. Some edits will still need be reviewed and approved by Google operators, however most of Map Maker will now be community moderated. Hackers use PDF documents to inject links and keywords and -- through cloaking techniques -- scam searchers to go to other web sites. Sophos, an IT security company, has uncovered a case of Google search spam involving “hundreds of thousands” of cloaked PDF documents with links that redirect human users to suspicious websites. It’s similar to the long-running type of hacking/spamming that involves placing HTML-based web pages on hacked websites, but in this case involves placing PDFs. The technique may not be necessarily new, but Sophos documented cases where the PDF content is ranking highly in Google’s search results. The company informed Google about this technique, but decided to publish their findings after not hearing back from Google. We also reached out to Google early this morning and have not heard back. Google is now indexing nearly 5x the Tweets as four months ago, yet more than 96% of Tweets still go Not indexed.   Earlier this year, Google gained access to Twitter data  thanks to a new deal between the two digital giants. However, initial findings showed that Tweets were being indexed at a very low rate, with just 0.6% of Tweets indexed in February.
